- Lot Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A lovely terracotta figure of Eros, Greek god of love and desire, embodying the Classical ideal as he stands nude in contrapposto with the soft folds of a chlamys wrapped around his arms and cascading down his back. Shown here in the traditional Greek manner as a youthful male, the handsome deity turns to his right, gazing downward and leaning upon a baluster with his right arm as he bends his left at his elbow, resting his hand on his posterior. His slender body dynamically twists in an s-curve-like position, reminiscent of the feminine form, while his naturalistic visage is crowned by a thick coiffure and wreath of leaves. Liberal remains of white and gray pigments adorn the surface of this ancient figure. Size: 2.9" W x 7.2" H (7.4 cm x 18.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
