Greece, late Hellenistic period, ca. 2nd to 1st centuries BCE. An earthenware votive figure of the goddess Aphrodite, mold-made and hollow. She stands contrapposto on a cube pedestal, nude, with one hand holding an apple - traditional symbol of the goddess - and the other raised to hold a flowing cloak that cascades down her back. Her coiffure is well-formed and appears almost crown-like as it caps her naturalistic visage. Several necklaces adorn her elongated neck, falling down her body, between her petite breasts and resting on her belly. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, sex, and beauty, is depicted here (as she always was) with the ideal Greek body - small, perky breasts, a narrow waist, and elaborate, long hair. The votive statue may have been placed in a small household altar or given as an offering at a temple dedicated to the goddess. Size: 4.25" W x 12" H (10.8 cm x 30.5 cm)
