**First Time At Auction**
Ancient Greece, Eastern Mediterranean, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A skillfully carved head fragment of a bearded man, perhaps depicting a deity such as Zeus, but possibly a more pedestrian portrayal as the new international culture of the Hellenistic era led to a wide range of subject matter. The visage is rather poignant as it stares outwards with his heavy lidded, almond-shaped eyes, seemingly past the confines of space and time, with parted lips as if deeply, silently contemplating the mysteries of existence. The profile of his nose traces down to the top of his bushy mustache, and the bottoms of his cheeks are lined with the billowing tufts of hair comprising his beard. A majestic countenance with veristic details characteristic of sophisticated Hellenistic artistry! Size: 4" L x 3.25" W (10.2 cm x 8.3 cm); custom old display stand with collection label included.
The arts prospered during the Hellenistic period when kings took pride in being patrons of the arts and commissioned public art as well as private luxury pieces to demonstrate their elite taste and wealth. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Hellenistic milieu was that artists were commissioned to portray rather unorthodox subjects, including working-class maidens, the elderly, children, and ethnic phenotypes.
