Greece, late Hellenistic Period, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. A wonderful earring of an incredibly elegant presentation evocative of ancient Greece, formed from 77% gold (equivalent to 18K+ gold) and 21% silver. The central element is a hand-carved agate intaglio with beveled edges, a flat base, and an obverse face with the carved-out image of a recumbent auroch bull. The intaglio is set within a grooved gold setting which is surmounted by a finial in the form of a cresting wave. Beneath the intaglio hangs a petite and elaborate mold-formed amphoriskos which is accentuated with a small flared foot, a single spiraling handle, and dozens of applied gold granules in triangular motifs around the midsection. A stunning example of fine Hellenistic artistry made wearable by the modern gold-filled French hook. Size (earring): 2.6" H (6.6 cm); size (intaglio): 0.4" Diameter (1 cm); quality of gold: 21% silver and 77% gold (equivalent to 18K+); total weight: 6.4 grams.
