Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. An amazing large terra-cotta statue of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, standing in an elegant contrapposto position. She stands with her weight on her proper left leg and bends the right with her foot slightly behind. She is depicted having just come out of her bath and is seen in her quintessential subtle pose as she attempts to cover her privates with her hands. The surface of the statue would have once been entirely covered in gold gilding making it seem as though the statue was made out of solid gold. Remnants of this gilding can be seen in several areas under the earthen encrustation. The statue has survived in a spectacular state of preservation with only one arm reattached which is amazing for a terra-cotta statue of this size. Aphrodite has idealized proportions and a soft smile as she gazes out. She also fashions a beautiful bow-like top knot coiffure and her hair is gathered into a bun in the back. Mounted on a custom bronze base. Size: 3.5" L x 1.5" W x 17.25" H (8.9 cm x 3.8 cm x 43.8 cm)
