Ancient Greece, late Hellenistic Period, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. A lovely cast-bronze figure of Herakles (Roman Hercules) standing nude atop an integral plinth. Herakles presents nude in a standing pose atop delineated legs with his left leg bent slightly at the knee, his musculature rippling across his body, while he places his right arm to his hip. His face peers forward with petite eyes and a slender nose above full lips, and his typically shaggy coiffure is covered by the open-mouthed pelt of the mythologically fearsome Nemean Lion. Fine layers of brown and green patina envelop the entire figure and imbue it with attractive color. Size: 1.79" W x 4.13" H (4.5 cm x 10.5 cm); 4.6" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand. The iconography of this bronze references the legendary hero's first labor when King Eurystheus asked Herakles to bring him the skin of a fierce lion that terrorized the hillside around Nemea - a seemingly impossible task. Despite the fact that initially Herakles' arrows were utterly useless against this threatening beast, our hero ultimately succeeded, clutching the lion in his muscular arms all the while strategically avoiding its claws, finally choking it to death.
