Ancient Greece, Athens, Geometric Period, ca. 8th century BCE. A gorgeous wheel-thrown pottery kantharos with a planar base, a wide apple-shaped body with a tapered shoulder, a thin rim, and a pair of tall loop handles arching between rim and midsection. The cream-slipped vessel is decorated with elegant, black-painted geometric and linear motifs that zigzag, intersect, and flow across the composition. Fretted panels adorn both of the handles, and swaths of solid pigment envelop the lower half of the body as well as the basin interior. A wonderful example from Geometric-era Greece! Size: 5.25" W x 3.6" H (13.3 cm x 9.1 cm).
