Ancient Greece, Geometric period, ca. 8th century BCE. A fine gathering of bronze items from ancient Greece, cast into a bracelet, bird finial, and an unusual pendant-like implement. The intriguing bronze implement was possibly a funerary pendant or amulet and consists of a long central rod and 4 raised rows of 6 knobs running the length of the shaft, and a squat neck with a slightly conical finial tip. Scholars have posited that these bronze objects were jug stoppers or even pendants for the deceased. The bird finial is in the form of a stylized rooster, with a crested head, and flared tail, the feet stand on a rounded base, that may have been attached to a larger object such as a vessel or lamp. The bracelet is a child-sized torc-style cuff, comprised of twisted, heavy bronze that tapers toward flattened flanges with applied filigree. A rich green patina envelops the surfaces of each piece. Size (implement): 2.35" L x 0.5" W (6 cm x 1.3 cm); (bird): 2.75" L x 0.65" W x 2.5" H (7 cm x 1.7 cm x 6.4 cm); (bracelet): 1.65" Diameter x 0.25" W (4.2 cm x 0.6 cm)
Items like the knobbed implement have been found in several areas of the northern Greek peninsula - from Macedonia to Boeotia - but their meaning is not fully known. For many years, people believed that they were used as a form of stopper for a jug or amphora, but they have never been found with a vessel, and their real use is not clear.

Condition
Losses to rooster's head and beak, chips to tail, and abrasion to base. Bracelet is bent with slightly misshapen flanges with tearing to the peripheries and stable fissure on the center of the band. Due to the inelasticity of the bronze, we do not recommend wearing. Bronze implement is intact with age expected surface abrasions. Green patina and mineral deposits on all 3 pieces.
