Greek Empire, eastern Greece, ca. 4th century BCE. Stunning amphoriskos (created to hold perfumes and ointments) in a rare and desirable color pattern. Rods of white and purple glass were skillfully wrapped around a solid sand core with addition of zig-zags, waves and solid bands. Small strap handles were applied after the vessel was completed in solid white glass. Size: 2.125" W x 4.125" H (5.4 cm x 10.5 cm)
The first piece of ancient glass that I ever saw in a private gallery (Harmer Rooke) was of this form and color pattern. I was amazed that such things survived the 2500 years since they were made. I am still amazed today!
