Magna Graecia, South Italic, Campanian, attributed to the CA Painter, ca. third quarter of the 4th century BCE. An elegantly shaped lebes gamikos, a vessel associated with weddings. The form is comprised of a bulbous body upon a raised foot, high arched handles to either side of the circular lid with a conical peaked handle. Each side of the vessel features a standing cloaked ephebos (also ephebe or ephebus) figure - a male adolescent facing left with a white floral wreath in his hair, his body covered in the billowing folds of his cloak, and sandals. Beneath each handle is a large composite palmette with white blooms. Size: 4.125" in diameter x 7.5" H (10.5 cm x 19 cm)
Lebes gamikos (plural lebetes gamikoi) are important and highly-symbolic vessels created in the Classical world. High handles and ornate designs characterize this particular style, and were used primarily in times of great happiness or immense sorrow. This form of pottery was used during ancient marriage ceremonies - its name literally meaning "marriage vase" - in order to ritualistically sprinkle the bride with water prior to the wedding. Lebetes gamikoi were also an integral component of funerary rituals, used to consecrate the body of and act as a grave marker for women who died without experiencing the act of betrothal.
According to Trendall, "The vases of the CA Painter tend to have a bright and rather pleasing aspect, partly due to the attractive light orange colour of the terracotta and even more to the plentiful use of added white and yellow, with occasional touches of red, for drapery or details, and to the application of a pink to red wash, which is particularly noticeable on the pattern-work."
