**First Time At Auction**
Greece, Attic (Athens), attributed to the Hound and Hare Group, ca. 500 to 480 BCE. A splendid pottery lekythos attributed to the Hound and Hare Group - a group of Athenian black-figure vase-painters - appropriately boasting action-packed decoration of a hound pursuing a hare on the shoulder and a pair of nude athletes flanked by male youths on the body. At the top, the slender canine bounds forward, chasing his long-eared prey, who leaps off, narrowly escaping the jaws of his foe. The annular shape of the shoulder gives the impression that the 2 will forever race around the neck of the vessel, caught in an endless game of cat and mouse, or rather hound and hare. The body of the lekythos features a similarly energetic scene of 2 nude athletes sprinting right, the first with legs bent in the position of a standing start as he turns back to grab a relay baton from his partner who hurdles forward. Size: 2.4" Diameter x 4.9" H (6.1 cm x 12.4 cm)
A pair of figures draped in long chitons and himations stand to either side, each facing inward and grasping a spear or pole, as though to frame the main action of the scene. Horizontal stripes adorn the area below the runners as well as the shoulder edge, while the base, foot, spout, and handle are all enveloped in a lustrous coat of black glaze.
This lekythos has been attributed to the Hound and Hare Group of painters due to the decoration on the shoulder for which the group is known. The group was named by Beazley (following Haspels ABL) due to the unusual subject (a hound pursuing a hare) decorating the shoulder. Other lekythoi by the Hound and Hare group can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (53.192.8), the Athens Agora Museum (P24412), the British Museum (1772,0320.10.+, 1864,1007.177, and 1864,1007.179), and many other esteemed institutions throughout the world. A Hound and Hare lekythos with the same imagery on the body as this example can be found at the St. Petersburg State Hermitage Museum under accession number P1911.16.
