Greece, Athens (Attic), Phanyllis Group, ca. 530 to 500 BCE. An Attic black-figure lekythos by the Phanyllis Group depicting two intimidating centaurs surrounding a hoplite who is posed upon one bended knee toward the centaur on his left yet simultaneously turning his head back to face the centaur on his right, protecting himself with his shield and sword. The figures are delineated in black figure with incised details as well as features delineated with fugitive red pigment. Above the hoplite, on the shoulder of the vessel, is a stylized palmette flanked by opposing cloaked figures. The vessel's mouth, strap handle, and lower body are glazed black in contrast with the buff terracotta areas. Size: 4" W x 6.7" H (10.2 cm x 17 cm)
According to L'Erma di Bretschneider, "The basis for classification of the Phanyllis Group was the characteristic form of a lekythos found on Delos which served as a dedication from one Phanyllis to the goddess Hera, as we learn from an inscription on the vessel (Haspels, ABL, 64 ff.). This vessel has a rounded body or body more elongated towards the top, with broad sloping shoulders, a short neck and strongly widening lip. Within this large group Haspels and Beazley identified five sub-groups on the basis of style of painting and decoration on the shoulder.
