Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th century BCE. An elegant drinking vessel known as a skyphos that is wheel-thrown from pottery with a squat foot, a broad body with a shallow basin, and a pair of handles projecting off the side walls. Impressed within the center of the basin are 4 petite palmette leaves that create a delicate presentation. The entire vessel - save for the pedestal and underside of the foot - is enveloped in lustrous jet-black glaze that has developed wondrous silvery iridescence over time. A sophisticated utilitarian vessel from ancient Athens! Size: 6.8" W x 2.25" H (17.3 cm x 5.7 cm)
