Greece, Athens, subject matter similar to the Group of Vatican G. 50, ca. 525 to 475 BCE. A spectacular pottery pitcher decorated in Black-figure depicting a Dionysian theme with a draped Dionysos seated and holding his drinking horn - facing a dancing maenad standing in composite profile. There are lovely grapevines in the field - dotted and with larger grape clusters. Branches in the field. In addition to this iconography, the surrounding decorative program is outstanding. Note the checkerboard pattern on the front rim, the registers of Greek key meander and a continuous dotted zigzag band below, and left and right borders to the scene of that same zigzag pattern. The figures are further detailed via incised markings and fugitive red pigment. The tall vessel shows a torus foot and an elegant strap handle joining rim to body. Size: 9.375" H (23.8 cm)
The subject and ornaments of this olpe compare with examples of the Group of Vatican G. 50. The olpe attributed to the Group of Vatican G. 50 that comes closest to this example for its subject matter is Rhodes 11884 (BAPD 351388, Para 190, 1). This vessel depicts Dionysos seated and a maenad dancing (http://www.beazley.ox.ac.uk/XDB/ASP/recordDetails.asp?id=22286122-92D5-4954-9C8B-09280F90DE89&noResults=&recordCount=&databaseID=&search=)
