Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. early 5th century BCE. A fabulous wheel-thrown pottery lekythos bearing a mythological scene of Dionysus (also Dionysos, Roman Bacchus), the god of wine and revelry, on a white ground. Dionysus presents wearing a flowing robe with finely incised pleats, his right arm bent with wrist placed atop his hip, as he comfortably reclines between a pair of musicians, one with a tambourine and one with a lyre. While the lower body is decorated with panels of solid black and a single beige stripe, the sloped shoulder is adorned with a series of palmettes, frets or rays, curvilinear grape vines, and a red line. Size: 8.875" H (22.5 cm)
