Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th century BCE. A beautiful lekythos - a vessel used to hold perfumes or other scented oils - finely painted via the black-figure technique with extensive incised details as well, the slender form supported by a flat footed base. The figural panel depicts a warrior stepping onto a biga drawn by two horses and led by a cloaked youth who holds a spear. At the side is a robed elder conversing with a helmeted warrior. In addition to this figural iconography, the vessel is decorated with rays adorning the shoulder. A wonderful example, replete with fine artistry and interesting iconography. Size: 2.875" W x 7.6" H (7.3 cm x 19.3 cm)
Lekythoi were used for storing oil used for a wide variety of purposes in the Classical World. While larger examples were usually designated for keeping olive oil, smaller more delicate examples like this one were reserved for the bath to store precious unguents of sweet and floral aromas. This beautiful vessel was most likely created for an elegant lady's toilette.
