Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th century BCE. A wonderful pottery lekythos showcasing a classic silhouette and black-figure decoration of 4 draped youths with a horse. The elegant vessel displays a discoid foot, an elongated body, a sloped shoulder that narrows to a tubular neck, a flared rim, and an arched, ribbon-form handle that connects neck to shoulder. Opposite the handle, the main scene on the body shows a horse facing right with 2 youths behind and 1 beside him, all holding long spears. A fourth male figure stands before the horse. Note the meticulous incised details that outline the figures and animal, adding clarity to the scene. The ancient lekythos is additionally embellished by a dotted pattern above the figures, a pair of horizontal bands below, and a ray motif along the shoulder. Black glaze envelops the rim, handle, bottom area, and foot. Size: 2.2" Diameter x 6.7" H (5.6 cm x 17 cm)
Lekythoi were used for storing oil employed for a wide variety of purposes in the Classical World. While larger examples were usually designated for keeping olive oil, relatively smaller more delicate examples were reserved for the bath to store precious unguents of sweet and floral aromas. This beautiful vessel was most likely created for an elegant lady's toilette.

Repair and restoration to neck, handle, and rim with some break lines and adhesive visible. A few minor chips to shoulder, foot, body, and handle. Expected nicks and abrasions. Some areas of repainting and fading to pigments. Otherwise, very nice with great preservation of detail and light earthen deposits in areas.
