Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 600 to 540 BCE. A stunning Attic black-figure pottery kylix of an exemplary form with a wide, shallow cup, a narrow stem, and upraised twin handles, all upon a short foot. The central tondo is adorned with the painted and incised image of a dancing satyr; a male nature spirit presenting with the ears and tails of a horse, the body of a human, and a permanent and exaggerated erection. An elaborate register comprised of 2 sections decorates the exterior, each displaying a lively procession of standing figures, horses, satyrs, and centaurs, highlighted with incised striations and strokes of white pigment. Characterized by their ribaldry, satyrs are known for their lascivious and inebriated behaviors, as well as their loves of wine, music, dancing, and women. As such, they were frequent companions of Dionysus (Roman Bacchus), the god of wine, fertility, and religious ecstasy, as well as the perfect decorative motif for a wine-drinking cup. A remarkable example of Attic black-figure painting and ancient Greek iconography, all complemented by a dazzling, silver-hued iridescence! The perfect conversation piece for your next symposium! Size: 9.75" in diameter x 3" H (24.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
