Greece, Athens, ca. 540 to 530 BCE. An elegant Attic kylix lip cup, the vessel presenting a classic form with a deep bowl, curved lip, and twin, upturned loop handles upon a pedestal base. The exterior walls are finely decorated via the black-figure technique. Both sides feature three nude running athletes or warriors wielding swords and shields (two in profile, one in composite profile) between a pair of draped figures, probably officials of the events. All figures are delineated with a sense of motion and energy and present fine incised details as well as highlights in fugitive red pigment. In addition, decorative palmettes, also presenting incised details and red fugitive pigment, adorn either side of each handle, and there is a reserve circle adorned by a black ring in tondo to further embellish the vessel. Of the utmost artistry and technique, a beautiful example associated with the celebratory ceremonies of the Dionysiac cult. Size: 10.875" W x 4.875" H (27.6 cm x 12.4 cm)
Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000

Condition
Vessel body professionally repaired from multiple pieces with restoration over the break lines. Five pairs of pinholes to body from old repairs. A few small chips to rim. Section of base reattached and some loss to periphery of base as shown. Handles repaired and reattached. All is very well done and figural imagery is still strong. Normal surface wear with some fading to iconography, but generally the imagery is still strong and presents nice incised details and fugitive red pigment.
