- Lot Description
John Gould (British, 1804-1881) and H.C. Richter (British, 1821-1902), a hand-colored lithograph entitled, "Euphema Splendida: Gould", from "Birds of Australia, volume V, plate. 42." Printed by Hullmandel & Walton, London, published between 1840 and 1848. "Birds of Australia" was the first comprehensive survey of Australian birds and included descriptions of 681 species. Remarkably, Gould was the first person to describe 328 of these species which were new to the science of ornithology. In 1838, Gould and his wife Elizabeth travelled from England to Australia to research the book. It took approximately two years to collect specimens for the book. John travelled widely making extensive collections of Australian birds and other fauna, while Elizabeth, who had illustrated several of his earlier works, made hundreds of drawings from these specimens for "The Birds of Australia" publication. John Gould was a revered self-taught English ornithologist and naturalist whose prints are regaled for their veristic renderings. His accuracy in capturing the traits of each bird species was the result of years of study. "The Birds of Australia" was a seven volume set of 681 species of birds and took several years to complete. During his lifetime, Gould was respected as a leading ornithological authority. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1843. The finest ornithological artists of the day worked for and also collaborated with Gould. These included Edward Lear, W. M. Hart, Joseph Wolf, and H. C. Richter. For "Birds of Australia", Gould's wife Elizabeth produced 84 plates before she passed away in 1841; Edward Lear produced one; Waterhouse Hawkins contributed one, and the remaining 595 plates were produced by H. C. Richter from Elizabeth's drawings and published under his name.
