Roman, the Levant, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. A beautiful and sizable mosaic panel constructed with hundreds of stone tesserae in hues of beige, cream, sage, ochre, grapefruit, cobalt, and jet. The composition features three flamingos standing upon sinuous legs and splayed feet with bulbous bodies draped with both light and dark feathers. Lengthy necks taper upwards and connect with ovoid heads, each bearing a single circular eye and a parted beak; two of the beaks are black while one exhibits a red-pink hue. Between the two larger avian creatures is a flowering plant with a pair of circular heads above serpentine stalks and projecting leaves. Mosaic panels like this were once part of a floor decoration, perhaps in a kitchen or dining room. Size (mosaic): 79.25" L x 24.125" W (201.3 cm x 61.3 cm); (frame): 82.7" L x 26.3" W (210.1 cm x 66.8 cm)
Mosaics (opus tesellatum) are some of our enduring images from the Roman world. They reveal everyday life, social interactions, and even things like clothing styles, personal ornamentation, and the interior of buildings in ways other styles of Roman art generally do not and give us an idea of what themes and decorations Romans wanted to encounter every day on the interior of their homes and public spaces. This mosaic may have been intended for a public space within a Roman villa such as an atrium, a vestibulum, or a triclinium - to remind the visitors of their hosts' virtuosity.

Stone tesserae composition is mounted on a concrete backing. Minor chips to some tesserae, with several stable hairline fissures and commensurate chips to obverse periphery of concrete backing, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to tesserae coloration and avian motif.
