This is surrounded by a band housing two rows of impressed dotted oval motifs as well as a band of impressed, almost cord-like motifs. The rim is decorated with two bands of impressed dotted oval motifs surrounding a central band of concentric circles, with incised borders. A register of incised tongue motifs adorns the upper end of the foot, and on the underside are concentric black glazed circles. Size: 6.375" in diameter x 2.25" H (16.2 cm x 5.7 cm)
Teano ware is a genre of ceramics created in the last quarter of the 4th century BCE to the first half of the 3rd century BCE and named for the ancient Teanum Sidicinum, the primary site in northern Campania where they were found, most likely their main center of production. Black is the primary color, although sometimes white pigment is used for added decoration. This vessel boasts an impressive decorative program created via impressed and incised patterns. A wonderful example of Teano ware that was most likely used for votive or funerary purposes.
