Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A gorgeous ring comprised of 97.62% gold (equivalent to 23K+) with a generous and wide band decorated with impressed and bas relief designs in diamond and circle motifs, symmetrically arranged across the surface. A central ridge and dotted border further accentuate the beautiful patterns. The band gradually narrows to a wrapped gold wire shank with a coiled spiral. The intricate design and workmanship of this piece is impressive, and this ring is well preserved and absolutely stunning! Size of decorated band: .75" L (1.9 cm); size of opening: .68" in diameter (1.7 cm); US ring size: 5; quality of gold 97.62% (equivalent to 23K+); total weight: 7.3 grams
Viking men and women wore gold and silver accessories like this example as signs of visual wealth. Jewelry was often used as currency or deposited in rivers as offerings to the gods, though it was also buried with owners upon death. Scholars believe that a popular practice was to amass a hoard of these precious objects and then deposit them, often in water sources like rivers. Gold rings - like all gold objects - were apparently quite rare, only found in graves of the highest status. In pagan Viking culture gold rings were used to swear oaths on and as markers of the godi, members of the Thing (governing assembly); some scholars have speculated that their deposition in hoards was an attempt to save them from violation with the coming sweep of Christianity.
