Roman, Republic Period, ca. 1st century BCE. A beautiful goat intaglio hand-carved from banded chalcedony (nicolo) and set inside the bezel of an antique 19th or early 20th century 16K+ to 21K gold ring (equivalent to 68% to 87.5% gold). The chalcedony, also known as nicolo, has banding of black, white, and ochre brown which are perfect for etching away the upper surface layer to reveal the color of the layer below - creating contrast between the intaglio image and surrounding surface. This intaglio bears an incised goat standing in profile facing left, the full body, horns, goatee, and hooves are painstakingly rendered in a naturalistic manner. The nicolo carving technique creates a slightly milkier hue to this recessed area. The gold ring has a circular shank, broad shoulders, and an open back bezel. Size of ring face: 0.64" Diameter (1.6 cm); band opening: 0.72" Diameter (1.8 cm); US size 8; gold quality: 68% to 87.5% (equivalent to 16K+ to 21K); weight: 3.9 grams
Please note that the ring's band is slightly ovoid and only fits on a mandrel ring sizer to a US size 6.25, but it fits a US size 8 finger.
Goats were symbolic to Romans primarily due to their association with the god Faunus (Pan in Greek mythology), who was linked to nature, fertility, and rustic music. Additionally, goats were associated with Bacchus (Dionysus in Greek mythology), the god of wine, festivity, and ecstasy, highlighting their importance in religious and celebratory contexts. Goats also symbolized fertility and vitality, reflecting their economic and practical value in Roman society.
