Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A handsome hand-carved carnelian intaglio stone set in a modern 50% gold (equivalent to 12K) shank. The ovoid stone is a deep red with two figures etched into the flat surface. A youthful man stands in composite profile, wearing a wreath and holding a wreath in one hand, the woman appears to hold a bow and quiver of arrows, likely a portrayal of the twin gods, Diana (Artemis) and Apollo. The gold shank is comprised of a rounded band that rises to shoulders with decorative ridges and triangular shapes. The ovoid bezel is set at the top and flares upward from the shank. A stunning and wearable ring that includes two of the most celebrated gods in Roman mythology. Minor surface wear and abrasions to shank. Small mineral deposit in carnelian stone. Intaglio carving is well preserved. Wearable on a modern shank!
