George Howard (American, active 20th century). Untitled acrylic on canvas, 1970. Signed and dated on the lower right. An abstract, hard-edge, color field painting of an impressive scale by George Howard. Bold, clearly delineated, geometric shapes in shades of red, white, and blue make for a dynamic composition that aligns with the 'pure painting' tenets of Post-Painterly Abstraction - pairing down painting to its most essential formalist elements. The composition, with its razor sharp edges is also intentionally 2-dimensional, bringing all imagery to the picture plane and rejecting any sense of illusionism and depth. An outstanding painting reflecting Clement Greenberg's philosophy that championed the purity of art - art for art's sake - set in its original walnut frame with a silvered edge. Size: 33" L x 38" W (83.8 cm x 96.5 cm) Size of frame: 33.5" L x 38.5" W (85.1 cm x 97.8 cm)
Color field painting first appeared in New York City as a mid-century modern style of the 1940s and 1950s. While departing from Action Painting or gestural abstraction, it was a branch within Abstract Expressionism. Artists such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still were among its pioneers who abandoned the figure and embraced color in order to convey the infinite. Their work would later inspire Post-Painterly Abstraction artists including Morris Louis, Helen Frankenthaler, Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland; however, for these later color field painters, form was more important than this idea of transcendence.
