Central Asia, Pakistan, India, or Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. When I saw this piece, my jaw literally dropped. Such an outstanding example! A stucco head of a bodhisattva or Prince Siddhartha before Enlightenment, delineated in high relief - mostly in the round - with a visage that is exceedingly lifelike - and copious curly locks of black hair cascading around the face and gathered into a topknot. Deep-set eyes with finely painted black irises and white sclera, neatly framed by neatly manicured browline that leads to a naturalistic nose, and a petite mouth with pursed coral hued lips and a philtrum and mustache above - all upon a rounded face with a delicate chin and surrounded by that halo of hair with long ears peeking out - contribute to a noble countenance. The naturalistic yet idealistic face demonstrates the skill of Gandharan artists who drew inspiration from the Greek influence of Alexander the Great's central Asian conquests. Size: 4.375" L x 4.875" W x 7.875" H (11.1 cm x 12.4 cm x 20 cm); 10.875" H (27.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The stylized curly Mediterranean hair and top knot derive from classical sculptures such as the Apollo Belvedere (330 BCE), and the sensitive modeling of the expressive visage demonstrates a classical influence as well.
