Central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to mid 5th century CE. A beautifully preserved decorative relief frieze, hand-carved from a deep grey schist. This relief was probably made as a single component designed to be set into an architecture element - above a column or in a wall - as evidenced by the grooves on its upper side where a layer above could have easily been locked in place. The center of the motif is an abstract spread of two large leaves around a central column and lower flourish that from a distance resembles the body of a male peacock with its tail feathers open for display. Cornucopiae extend from either side of this, with spirals ending in large roundels full of small, spade-shaped leaves extending from a single large vine marking out the upper corners. Size: 6.35" L x 13.5" W x 6.95" H (16.1 cm x 34.3 cm x 17.7 cm)
At the bottom are four spiral-shaped shells that rest against the narrow, straight border of the base. The upper part is bounded by a thicker border. The sides have been cut away, suggesting that this piece was set into a column or other narrow architectural feature, with both its horizontal ends exposed.
This is an amazing, imaginative carving from the period of Greco-Buddhist art that once graced a temple or palace. The Gandharan Empire made itself wealthy in part by controlling lucrative trade along the mountain passes between China in the East and the Near East and Mediterranean in the West; a great deal of this wealth went into local patronage of artisans and art.
