Central Asia, Pakistan / Afghanistan, Gandhara, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A hand carved schist reliquary or casket jar, made from 2 pieces and etched with geometric and floral / lotus petal motifs. The lid fits snugly into the raised lip of the body, forming an egg shaped vessel. Such reliquaries have been discovered with the contents intact and were used by Buddhists as devotional items for storing relics or cremated remains of Buddha or other sacred figures, for votive offerings for shrines and temples. They often took the form of hemispherical burial mounds known as stupas and these carved vessels were placed inside the stupa they emulated. the Buddha emitted a sandalwood scent when he reached enlightenment, monks would coat the exterior of the stupa structure with fragrant sandalwood, since as a reminder of his or other holy presences emanating from the reliquary within. Ancient perfume bottles from this period are also shaped like these reliquaries. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 4.3" H (8.9 cm x 10.9 cm)

Condition
Stable fissures around foot and chips to knobbed lid finial. Minor surface abrasions and chips throughout. Light mineral encrustations and nice root marks inside the lid.
