Western Europe, Northern France, Normandy, Caen Cave site, Mousterian, ca. 160,000 to 40,000 years ago. This amazing stone tool was fashioned by Neanderthals during the Middle Paleolithic period using an exceptionally large core-struck flint flake. This is a unique stone of olive and mint green hues and has the finest flaking, large side cutting edge, and a reduced end to attach to a bone or wood handle; thus, classified as a hafted side scraper. The shaping and workmanship are far beyond what would have been required for a purely utilitarian tool and displays advanced Neanderthal Mousterian tool technology. Masterful secondary prehistoric retouch and shaping is evident on all edges including the square proximal end, and all cutting edges are intact, showing use wear and evidence of original prehistoric re-sharpening. Intact mineral deposits and deep patina on the flint surfaces shows its great age, and a lustrous soil sheen further highlights the absolute best flaking we have seen in a tool of this type! Size: 2.75" L (7 cm)
This scraper is a superb example and collected from a former Neanderthal occupation cave site in Caen, France. The famous site has long been closed to collecting and is protected by the government, making this Paleolithic artifact exceedingly rare and desirable! The earthen green flint showcases the extraordinary flaking workmanship, and the beauty of this example is so fine that this tool was likely either a prestige piece or one owned by one of the most skilled Neanderthal toolmakers!
