Franz Xavier Bergman (Austrian, 1861-1936). "Running Warrior" cold-painted brass sculpture, ca. 1900. Stamped with Bergman's mark, 5801, and "GESCHUTZT" on underside of left leg. From the Viennese workshops of Franz Xavier Bergmann, a dramatic narrative unfolds in cold-painted brass: an Arab figure, caught in a moment of urgent motion, sprints across a craggy peak of natural granite. The meticulous detail, characteristic of Bergmann's Orientalist fascination, captures the flowing lines of his garments and the determined set of his jaw as he clutches a long rifle, poised for action. This sculpture, a testament to the European artistic appetite for exoticized depictions of the "Orient," freezes a fleeting moment, inviting contemplation on the power dynamics and romanticized visions inherent in the 19th-century lens through which such cultures were often viewed. Size: 10" L x 6.5" W x 7.6" H (25.4 cm x 16.5 cm x 19.3 cm)
Franz Xavier Bergmann (1861-1936) was an Austrian foundry owner renowned for his production of cold-painted bronze figures, a technique involving layers of dust paint applied after casting. While not a sculptor himself, his Viennese workshops employed numerous anonymous sculptors to create a diverse range of subjects. Bergmann's oeuvre is particularly noted for three main categories: whimsical and often humanized animal figures, erotic figures often concealed within other forms and signed with the pseudonym "Nam Greb" (Bergman reversed), and Orientalist sculptures, reflecting the era's European fascination with the Middle East and North Africa. His detailed and colorful pieces, often marked with a "B" in an urn-shaped cartouche, remain highly sought after by collectors today, embodying a significant aspect of Viennese bronze art and the Orientalist movement.
