William Henry Meyers (American, b. 1815) "The Decisive Battle for Los Angeles, ca. 1847. The repulse of the Mexicans on the plains of La Mesa 9 January 1847." From Franklin D. Roosevelt and William H. Meyers, Naval Sketches of the War in California, New York: Random House, 1939 which featured 28 drawings made by William H. Meyers, "Gunner on the U.S. Sloop-of-War Dale" - including this example. This was a limited edition and according to Grabhorn 317: "The method of color reproduction employed...is novel in the history of printing. First the original drawings were reproduced in black and white by a gravure process. The color blocks were then cut in linoleum and printed over the black and white prints. Shading was effected by sandpapering the linoleum." Size: image 13.75" W x 8.875" H (34.9 cm x 22.5 cm); 14.75" W x 10.125" H (37.5 cm x 25.7 cm) including visible margins; 21.125" W x 16.7" H (53.7 cm x 42.4 cm) framed
Meyers was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 15, 1815. In 1838, he boarded trading vessel to the West Indies, and joined the U. S. Navy soon thereafter, becoming a gunner on the Cyane in 1842 when Commodore Jones seized Monterey prematurely. He was also a gunner on the Dale during the War with Mexico. In 1847, Meyers resigned from the Navy on account of poor health. He then worked at the naval laboratory in Washington, DC. Meyers' depictions of gold mining activities as well as the American conquest of California are of historically significant.
