David Alfaro Siqueiros (Mexican, 1896-1974). "Dos Ninos" (Two Children - also "Madre Nina" - Child Mother) - lithograph E/E, ca. 1956. A strong and very large lithograph depicting a long-haired girl carrying a baby on her back in a Mexican rebozo. Both children, in tattered clothes and bare feet, present serious and perhaps weary and/or fearful expressions. According to the Art Museum of the Americas, where another edition is housed, "The piece - that can be inscribed into social realism - suggests a helpless march to nowhere. Bare feet, torn clothes, the image transmits abandonment, in which both characters symbolize a lost childhood." A poignant composition by one of the most famous early modern Mexican artists who lived a passionately politically-driven life. Size: 30.25" L x 23" W (76.8 cm x 58.4 cm); 36" L x 31" W (91.4 cm x 78.7 cm) framed
The AMA curatorial description continued, "The lithograph is based on an earlier painting in pyroxiline under the same title from 1936. Raquel Tibol has suggested that a 1920s photograph by Hugo Brehme served as inspiration for the painting. David Alfaro Siqueiros was used to working from photographs, some of them from newspapers but very often he would photograph his models, his wife Angelica, or even himself in specific poses he envisioned."
One of Los Tres Grandes (the Three Great Ones, along with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco), the Mexican social realist artist David Alfaro Siqueiros pursued revolutionary themes inspired by the Spanish Civil War and the Mexican Revolution, in which he participated. As a pioneer of the Mexican Mural Renaissance, Siqueiros also championed an appreciation for indigenous cultures and art forms.

Condition
Framed behind glass and has not been examined outside the frame. Appears to show slight foxing in margins and minor handling bends to sheet in margins, but image appears to be rich with a strong and dark signature. Frame is separated at upper left corner and shows some scuffs to finish. Gallery paper on verso is torn but this does not affect the image at all. Wired for suspension.
