Robert Natkin (American, 1930-2010), Seated Woman with Head Scarf, ca. 1970, lithograph, signed in pencil on lower right, numbered "S.A. 3/25" in pencil on lower left. This stunning lithograph in colors is somewhat of a departure for Robert Natkin whose works were usually entirely abstract compositions. Instead we see him rendering a seated female figure, nude save a head-scarf - all in a gorgeous color palette of sky blue, lemon yellow, spring green, cobalt blue, and creamy white - set under glass in a silver painted wooden frame. One still sees his penchant for abstraction in the background with intriguing shifting planes. Natkin was inspired by the lively and lyrical use of color by Matisse and Bonnard, Paul Klee's Cubism, jazz music, and film noir masters like Alfred Hitchcock. Size: 28.75" L x 21" W (73 cm x 53.3 cm); 35.625" L x 27.75" W (90.5 cm x 70.5 cm) framed
Born in Chicago, Robert Natkin graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1952. He then married artist Judith Dolnick, and they lived in Chicago where Natkin and a colleague opened the Wells Street Gallery which operated from 1957 to 1959. When Wells Gallery closed, Natkin moved to New York City and began showing his art with Poindexter Gallery.
