- Lot Description
Jan Myers (American, Contemporary) "Southwest Autumn" pastel, framed under glass, ca. 1990. Signed by the artist followed by PSA (Pastel Society of America) at lower center. A beautiful custom framed New Mexican landscape depicting a large expanse of beautiful desert plants, mountains in the distance, and azure blue skies above. Myers travels throughout the Southwest to find such wondrous views. She works with soft pastels rather than oil pastels, because she enjoys the expressive nature of this medium. About her process Myers writes, "I like to contrast bold scribbling strokes with softer, blended areas. A painting is never finished in one session. I come back to each painting at least ten times. Unfinished paintings are stacked on a shelf with glassine between each one. There are always about 40 unfinished paintings in the stack. My thinking and mood each morning dictate my work for the day." Size: 22" W x 14.5" H (55.9 cm x 36.8 cm); 33.75" W x 26.5" H (85.7 cm x 67.3 cm) framed
Myers has had numerous one-woman shows in Taos, Santa Fe, Tubac, and Denver. She and her husband, Art, live in Arvada, Colorado as well as Angel Fire, New Mexico. Myers is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and participates regularly in many juried national exhibits. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Colorado and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1978.
The medium of pastel originated in northern Italy during the 16th century and gained its greatest popularity during the 18th century when artists such as Jean-Baptiste Chardin, Francois Bouchet, and Rosalba Carriera created masterful pastel compositions. During the 19th century, some of the most famous artists of all time worked in pastel - including Mary Cassatt, William Merrit Chase, Edgar Degas, Pierre-August Renoir, Child Hassam, and Jean Francois Millet. Pastels continue to be coveted by artists, because they enable artists to capture scenes in the moment given the immediacy of the medium, and the colors are brilliantly saturated.
