USA Domestic: 12/14 for Standard; 12/23 for Express; International: 12/7 for Standard; 12/19 for ExpressGustav Kohler (German, 1859-1932), oil on board, ca. 1890 to 1900. Signed "Gustav Kohler" at upper right. A fine bust-length portrait of an elderly Bavarian gentleman, dressed in a dapper ensemble - shirt, bowtie, vest, jacket, and feathered hat - and smoking a beautiful pipe. Kohler painted portraits and genre paintings, and his style was remarkably realistic; the details of this gentleman's visage approach the verism of photography. Kohler's technique was impressive to say the least. Just look at the ruddy quality of the man's complexion, those well-earned wrinkles signifying his advanced age, and the various textures of his clothing, wispy hair, and smooth pipe. A striking portrait, set in a handsome frame under glass. Size: 5.25" L x 4" W (13.3 cm x 10.2 cm); 15" L x 14" W (38.1 cm x 35.6 cm) framed.

Condition
Signed "Gustav Kohler" at upper right. Painting has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in excellent condition. One can make out some fine passages of craquelure through the glass. The imagery and coloring are quite strong. Stamp on back of the frame (beneath gallery paper) reads "Georg Oberndorfer Kunsttischlerei" with a Munich address. Gallery paper on verso is torn. Modern hood added for suspension.
