- Lot Description
John Modesitt (American, b. 1955). "Town Square in Blois" oil on canvas, 2015. Signed on lower left. John Modesitt's "Town Square in Blois" presents the artist's painterly view of the Loire region. This town center thankfully retains its 19th century appearance along the Loire River. At the time Modesitt painted this view, he lived in Amboise, about 20 miles up the river, and would take day trips to paint at this location. Modesitt captured the scene with his adept loose brushwork and impasto conjuring a sense of spontaneity and boldly conveying the forms, emphasizing light effects, and embracing color rather than neutral hues. The painting is set in a custom frame that complements it beautifully. Size: 16" L x 20" W (40.6 cm x 50.8 cm) Size of frame: 23.4" L x 27.4" W (59.4 cm x 69.6 cm)
According to John, "My works range from strong (in the vein of Cezanne and Van Gogh) to light and ethereal (akin to Monet). This painting exemplifies my strong approach with passages of thick impasto and an emphasis on rhythm, movement, and flow."
John Modesitt has been inspired by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists since childhood. He studied art under Robert Frame, enjoyed painting en plein air, and eventually painted in France. Also studying the works of Pissarro, Monet, and Sisley in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, John painted almost exclusively in the same manner as the French Impressionists during his early twenties. Then, at age 33, Southern California became his muse and he joined the California Impressionists. John also painted views of New Mexico, painting en plein air at Canyon de Chelly and Taos. Eventually, John decided to visit France every summer and autumn to paint more obscure areas that artists do not typically visit. When he is not in France, he lives in Colorado where he continues to be inspired by his natural surroundings. Modesitt's work has had strong representation in prominent art galleries, and his paintings have been auctioned by Christie's and other esteemed auction houses.
