Jane Chao (Chinese/Hawaiian, 20th-21st century). Signed "Jane Chao" on lower right. Also signed Jane Chao above red chop (over floral imagery) as shown in photos. A stunning composition of Hawaiian flowers delineated with a rich color palette inspired by the natural surroundings of Hawai'i - Jane Chao's adopted home (where she lived with her husband Linus, a famous Disney animation artist) after living in both her native China as well as Japan. In her words, "My own style - it's not Japanese, it's not Chinese, it's not Western. Chinese and Japanese art is very serene. Not too much colors, but after I came to Hawai'i I saw so much color and thought. 'Never mind, I'll just paint the colors.'" The details are mesmerizing and the deep intense colors capture the serenity of nature's beauty. This very large composition is hand signed, also includes Chao's red chop, and is set in attractive custom mattes and framing. Size: 24.25" L x 19.5" W (61.6 cm x 49.5 cm); 37.5" L x 32.25" W (95.2 cm x 81.9 cm) including framing
Jane Chao was born in China, lived in Japan from age 4 to 12, then returned to Harbin in 1941. She studied art in both Japan and China, and at the end of the war, her father was imprisoned, and she and her mother fled to Taiwan. It was there that she met her husband, Linus Chao. The artist couple would relocate to Hawai'i in 1969, and Linus would eventually become an animation artist for Disney Studies (Mary Poppins) and later Hanna-Barbera (The Flinstones and Yogi Bear).
Chao primarily paints in watercolor on silk and paper. According to the artist's statement of her book, "Jane Chao was born in China, grew up in Japan, moved to Taiwan after World War II and came to Hawaii in 1969 with her family. She started learning art at a young age in Japan and continued to pursue art throughout the years. Jane has adopted Chinese and Japanese brush painting techniques and combines western concepts to create her own unique style of paintings." (Jane Chao's Art Book, publisher: The Magic Mo, 2019)
