Herbert Sartelle (American, 1885-1955), untitled oil on canvas, signed on lower right, ca. 1930. A beautiful landscape painting by Herbert Sartelle who sophisticated technique and color palette is truly wondrous - capturing the rosy pinks, azure blues, and warm golds of either dawn or dusk. The artist draws us in with desert brush in the foreground, rolling hills and mountainsides in the middle ground, and ethereal skies occupying more than half of the composition. The piece is set in what appears to be the original frame which is elegantly carved with curvaceous motifs at the corners and gilded to surround the painting with a luminous glow. Size: 16" W x 12.125" H (40.6 cm x 30.8 cm); 19.25" W x 15.25" H (48.9 cm x 38.7 cm) including frame

He returned to New York City in 1909 in order to work for Rogers & Hammerstein and soon after on the R.K.O. circuit.
Throughout his 25 year career in show business, Earl Burdick Jr. also enjoyed the visual arts, sketching and painting for pleasure. In 1928, he left show business and settled in Los Angeles. It was at this time that he changed his name to his mother's maiden name and adopted his middle name. Now Herbert Sartelle, he traveled throughout southern California painting nature and continuing his work as a magician. Sartelle's desert scenes capture the light and beauty of the Palm Springs and San Diego areas. In addition, the region's purple mountains and rolling hills dotted with poppies served as a great inspiration for Sartelle's landscape paintings. Today Sartelle's work is in the collection of the Santa Cruz City Museum.
