Francesca Draper (American). "Capri, Italy" oil on canvas, 1963. Signed "F. Draper Capri '63" in black on lower right. A lovely watercolor of the Via Dei Castiglione on the isle of Capri, Italy - built 820 feet above sea level - amidst verdant hills and majestic mountains. American artist William Draper was an avid world traveler and took his family along on trips. This composition was created by his daughter Francesca during one of their visits to Italy. Size: painting itself measures 19.375" W x 14" H (49.2 cm x 35.6 cm); 25.125" W x 19.75" H (63.8 cm x 50.2 cm) framed
According to Francesca's sister, this painting was created during a family trip to Italy and Switzerland in 1963, and everyone in the family painted this scene of Capri. Their father, William Draper (1912-2003), was American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Draper was a combat artist who served in the US Navy during World War II, a revered portrait painter whose subjects included President John F. Kennedy (Draper was actually the only artist who painted JFK from life), as well as a gifted landscape artist who studied under Henry Hensche in Provincetown. Draper showed at Knoedler, the Graham Gallery, Portraits, Inc., the Far Gallery, The Findlay Galleries (New York, NY) and the Robert C. Vose Galleries (Boston, MA). His work has been included in shows at the National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), The National Academy of Design (New York, NY), The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, (Boston, MA) the Fogg Art Museum, (one of the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA), the National Gallery, (London), Salon de la Marine (Paris) and in museums in Australia. He also taught at the Art Students League of New York, and received a lifetime achievement award from the Portrait Society of America in 1999.
