Enrico Tanzi (Italian, born 1909), "Meeting", oil on canvas, 1962. Signed at lower left. A brilliant painting by Italian artist Enrico Tanzi, delineated with a modern expressionist style, a brilliant color palette, and intriguing subject matter. Tanzi includes six white horses and their riders, two still mounted upon their steeds and four standing beside them. The figures - both equestrians and horses - are rendered with elongated proportions, angular contours, and minimal facial features - somehow conflating specificity with generalization - conveying their personalities yet highly stylized. The setting is deceptively simple - rich greens for the ground and blues for the sky - but note how Tanzi handled the gradations of these hues to indicate light and depth - the greens ranging from forest to teal to spring green, the blues from midnight to sapphire to royal to azure blue. A very special painting by Tanzi, epitomizing his avant-garde style and adept technique. Size: 19" W x 15.25" H (48.3 cm x 38.7 cm); 23.75" W x 19.625" H (60.3 cm x 49.8 cm) framed
