David Corrick Swing (American, 1864-1945), oil on board landscape painting, ca. 1920s to 1930s. Signed on lower right. A beautiful landscape painting of the American Southwest, presenting the colorful Arizona desert replete with cacti, rocky terrain, brush, and mountains in the background. Swing was active in Pasadena, California prior to moving to Arizona in 1917 where he created paintings of the Arizona desert like this example. Swing also created murals for the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, California and the Phoenix Masonic Temple. A beautiful painting with very interesting provenance as it was once owned by Henry Beston, an American writer and naturalist best known for "The Outermost House" (1928). Size: 13" W x 8.75" H (33 cm x 22.2 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-John P. Richardson collection, Massachusetts, USA; according to note on verso, this painting was acquired from Elizabeth Coatesworth of Boston, Massachusetts who said the painting was a gift to her husband, author Henry Beston, during a trip to the West. According to Coatesworth, David Swing had been impressed by Beston's book entitled, "The Outermost House" (1928).
