Northern or Western Europe, ca. late 19th century, signed “CM Durmam” or “CM Dukmam” in red on lower left. A charming oil on canvas painting of a European town rendered with marvelous loose brushwork and lush passages of impasto. The palette of warm earth tones, cool blues, and creamy white is very soothing, and the artist demonstrates impressive command of linear perspective and chiaroscuro to create a marvelous sense of depth. We are drawn in to the composition - welcomed to walk on a central street with other pedestrians, including an elderly couple to the left and a father and child on the right. As we visually proceed through the scene, we pass stone buildings with open windows and outstretched awnings. Beyond the grand arch of the overpass is a horse-drawn wagon as well as a woman and child who look on. Although the exact location of this scene is unknown, the artist has certainly placed us there via this fabulous composition. Size (canvas): 10.6" W x 12.8" H (26.9 cm x 32.5 cm); (frame): 14.6" W x 16.8" H (37.1 cm x 42.7 cm)

Painting shows expected age wear and nice areas of craquelure. Signed “CM Durmam” or “CM Dukmam” in red on lower left.Frame is in very good condition and probably dates later than the painting. A few tears to gallery paper on verso. Wired for suspension.
