Ruth Valerio (b. Oxfordshire, England in 1938, active in Santa Fe, New Mexico), "Chapel with Hollyhocks" oil on canvas, ca. 2000s. Signed "R. Valerio" on lower left. A finely descripted landscape painting depicting a quaint church in a pastoral landscape filled with hollyhocks. Valerio studied plein air painting with Irby Brown, composition and design with Ted Goerschner and John Poon, and various stylistic techniques with Carolyn Anderson and Laura Robb. Valerio has stated, "Everywhere you look in Santa Fe there's something to paint! I also find endless subjects in my English-style garden with hollyhocks, roses, Shasta daisies, delphiniums, poppies, daffodils and more. But it is the light in New Mexico and the way it energizes color that I strive to capture in my paintings." Size: 18" W x 14" H (45.7 cm x 35.6 cm); 18" L x 22.5" W x 18.75" H (45.7 cm x 57.2 cm x 47.6 cm) framed.
According to the Mary Williams Fine Arts descriptive label on the verso of this painting, "Clairvoyantly descriptive landscapes, rhapsodic still lifes, and mood-inducing genre paintings; these are the passions of Santa Fe artist Ruth Valerio. Her canvases reflect not only twenty years of observing and painting in the fabled northern New Mexico light, but also the experience of growing up in the softer-focus, diffused light lushness of Oxfordshire, England."
