Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa was a multi-faceted French artist: not only a printmaker, but also a draughtsman, caricaturist, illustrator, and painter who was among the most successful artists of the Post-Impressionist period, along with Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Georges Seurat.Toulouse-Lautrec thoroughly enjoyed the theatrical life of Paris during the late 19th century, and this immersion in the theater scene informed his artistic interpretations of the modern, sometimes risque, activities of that era.
According to the Museum of Modern Art's colorful description of this composition, "The booming cafe-concert scene demanded a constant supply of new music, and Lautrec made numerous cover illustrations for songs sung or written by his friends. Among these was Desire Dihau, a distant cousin of Lautrec's who played bassoon with several Paris orchestras, including those of the Opera de Paris and the El Dorado."
