Michael Drayton (British, 1563-1631). Engraved by William Hole (British, d. 1624). Map of Gloucestershyre and Worcestershyre for "Poly-Olbion" ca. 1612-1622. A hand-colored, engraved map of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire by cartographer Michael Drayton, created for "Poly-Olbion" - an epic topographical poem comprised of 30 songs composed with Aledandrine couplets that each describe the traditions, topographies, and histories of one, two, or three counties. The illustrations on this map are not only beautiful, but also symbolic. Crowned females represent cities; nymphs represent rivers; huntresses represent forests, and shepherds represent hills. A stunning 17th century map, most impressive for its illustrations of various allegorical figures, set in a beautiful custom frame. Approximate size of map (slightly larger with margins): 9.75" L x 13.125" W (24.8 cm x 33.3 cm) Size of frame: 18.3" L x 22.3" W (46.5 cm x 56.6 cm)
Label on the verso includes the following description, "Drayton's maps (engraved by William Hole) are the most fantastic and fanciful British county maps ever produced! Geographic accuracy was secondary to decorative appeal of nymphs, river gods, shepherds and diverse creatures of Drayton's lengthy paean to England. 'These maps were designed to amplify texts which celebrated the growing national pride and patriotic glory of the renaissance kingdoms of the Tudor and early Stuart period.'" Condition
The map has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very nice condition. It has a strong centerfold as intended. There are a few minor crease marks and stains commensurate with age. Coloring, imagery, and text are vivid. On the verso is a Certificate of Authenticity from Charles Edwin Puckett as well as an informative label. Framing is very nice with only a few minor scuffs/nicks. Wired for suspension and ready to display.
