Ancient Near East, Iran & Turkey, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A fabulous cast bronze dagger with a winged hilt. The blade is lengthy with a double cutting edge and pointed tip, which are still relatively sharp despite its age. The blade connects to a flat hilt with two curved indents, perhaps to facilitate grip. A "double ear" or "winged" pommel sits at the end; a bifurcated shape with each side taking the shape of a flattened semi-circle, a form that resembles two horse's hooves. This is a classic example of a fine dagger that was used by the nomadic Luristani people and perhaps became a votive piece in a burial tomb with the departed warrior. This exquisite weapon is professionally mounted in a wooden frame with a velvet backing and engraved brass label plate. This dagger is ready to be displayed and admired. Size of dagger: 14.6" L x 1.65" W (37.1 cm x 4.2 cm); frame: 20" L x 12" W (50.8 cm x 30.5 cm)
The region of Luristan, which encompasses the rugged Zagros Mountain chain, is famous for its metal craftsmanship that was above and beyond the skill level of contemporary groups. The affluent group in Luristan society that patronized the metalworking industry and purchased fine items like this dagger were nomadic horsemen. They would travel into towns and purchase swords and other bronze and iron objects from craftsmen there. Although these horsemen were pre-literate, we know from the records of the Elamites and other southern neighbors that these tribesmen functioned as mercenaries in the constant warfare between the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Elamites. When they died, they were buried in rock-covered tombs with weapons like this one.
