John Ernest Haugse (American, 1937-2020). "Apostle" 1958. A striking composition entitled "Apostle" by award-winning artist, writer, and filmmaker John Haugse who worked in a distinctive abstract style. The apostle's visage departs from being representational; instead Haugse executed it with dramatic expressionism, using form and gesture to achieve his effect. An impressive work by Haugse, set in a custom matte and frame. Size of print: 16.5" L x 6.5" W (41.9 cm x 16.5 cm) Size of frame: 23.25" L x 12.875" W (59.1 cm x 32.7 cm)
Haugse earned his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied with Richard Diebenkorn and Frank Lobdell, among other luminaries. In 1964, he earned his MFA at the University of Oregon. He also taught in art departments at Harvard University’s Carpenter Center, UC Santa Barbara College of Creative Studies, Lewis and Clark College in Portland, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. In 1976, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and produced an animated thematic study of love lost and regained entitled "Freefall". At the end of his life he created a rethinking of his memoir about his father, "At A Certain Age: Heavy Snow Revisited". Haugse exhibited his work in galleries in California, Washington and Oregon.

Condition
Print has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in excellent condition. Minor scuffs to the frame and tears to the gallery tape on the verso that do not impact the image. A handwritten inscription on the verso reads, "'Apostle' by John Haugse / Midland College / Fremont, Nebraska / 1958 / given to Fred Tonsing / 1959"
