Liuboslav Hutsaliuk (Ukrainian-American, 1923-2003). Untitled (Porch View), watercolor, September 18, 1968. Signed and dated at lower left. A beautiful composition painted by one of the best known Ukrainian-American artists during the 20th century. Liuboslav Hutsaliuk (whose first name was also spelled Lubomyr, Luboslau, Ljuboslav, or shortened to Lubo and surname also spelled Hucaljuk) is best known for his Post-Impressionist cityscapes, landscapes, and still lifes. This painting is an outstanding example of his work, depicting a view of a picturesque lakefront from a balustraded porch , all delineated in a colorful palette of aqua, spring green, vermion, violet, fuchia, and more. A special piece that showcases the "lyric color" for which Hutsaliuk was known (Ukrainian Weekly, 28 December 2003). Size: 17" W x 10.75" H (43.2 cm x 27.3 cm); 19.5" W x 13" H (49.5 cm x 33 cm) framed
During the 1960s, Hutsaliuk became associated with the Soyuzivka, a Ukrainian American artistic center in New York City. In addition to being a masterful painter, Hutsaliiuk was also a caricaturist and cartoonist. His drawings were published in the satirical journal "Lys Mykyta". Furthermore, Hutsaliuk published art reviews in the newspaper "Svoboda" as well as the journal "Suchasnist". Le Hors-Cote waxed poetically about Hutsaliuk in 1959, "This urban landscape artist seems to inlay his colors into the canvas to give us cityscapes that haunt us with their new faces."(Ukrainian Weekly, 28 December 2003). Hutsaliuk's works may be found internationally in collections in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, as well as the Palm Springs Desert Museum and Vermont Arts Center in United States.
