Liuboslav Hutsaliuk (Ukrainian-American, 1923-2003). Untitled (Eglise de Lviv) ink drawing, ca. 1970s. Signed in pencil at lower right. A wonderful drawing by one of the best known Ukrainian-American artists of the 20th century. This composition was perhaps a study for his painting of Eglise de Lviv (1979) - a Ukrainian Orthodox church in the city of Lviv. Liuboslav Hutsaliuk (whose first name was also spelled Lubomyr, Luboslau, Ljuboslav, or shortened to Lubo and surname also spelled Hucaljuk) is best known for his Post-Impressionist cityscapes, landscapes, and still lifes. A wonderful drawing by Hutsaliuk, framed under glass. Size: 8.625" W x 5.5" H (21.9 cm x 14 cm); 15.75" W x 12.5" H (40 cm x 31.8 cm) framed
Le Hors-Cote waxed poetically about Hutsaliuk in 1959, "This urban landscape artist seems to inlay his colors into the canvas to give us cityscapes that haunt us with their new faces."(Ukrainian Weekly, 28 December 2003) During the 1960s, Hutsaliuk became associated with the Soyuzivka, a Ukrainian American artistic center in New York City. In addition to being a masterful painter, Hutsaliiuk was also a caricaturist and cartoonist. His drawings were published in the satirical journal "Lys Mykyta". Furthermore, Hutsaliuk published art reviews in the newspaper "Svoboda" as well as the journal "Suchasnist". Hutsaliuk's works may be found internationally in collections in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, as well as the Palm Springs Desert Museum and Vermont Arts Center in United States. (Ukrainian Weekly, 28 December 2003 and Liuboslav Hutsaliuk - AskART)
